Entre Volcanes
Michoacán, México — Lanzarote, España
2025
Four large photographs, one hundred small images, two handwritten wall texts
Between Volcanos unites a huge distance between the Canary Islands and Mexico through space and time, to explore the relationship between 2 volcanic eruptions, one more than 250 years ago and the other 80. At Parícutin in Michoacan, Mexico a cone volcano formed over only 9 years from 1943, on Lanzarote eruptions began in 1730 changing the landscape of the island and creating areas that have slowly been adapted for human use. On a journey through Lanzarote with a large format camera I recorded changes in the earth’s surface caused by the volcanos and the human adaption that has happened since.
Two texts handwritten on the walls narrate contemporary experience, extracted from aural accounts of those who lived through the eruption of Tamanfaya in 1730 and an account I wrote about the eruption in Michoacan in Mexico where a farmer was present at the beginning of the volcano which he witnessed as a crack formed in the ground beneath his feet, he spoke of his experience that then inspired my retelling of events.
Between Volcanos tracks our engagement with and dependence upon fire through places and images. These include the Atacama desert, the rainforest in the Colombian Amazon alongside the volcano at Paricutin in Mexico and Timanfaya on Lanzarote.
